Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Students who have been granted Deferred Action under the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ prosecutorial discretion may qualify to have the non-resident portion of their tuition waived via a tuition waiver. The student will remain classified as an “out-of-state” student for tuition purposes.  Once applied to a student’s account, the DACA non-resident tuition waiver will allow the student to pay the in-state tuition rate.

Please note: Receipt of the DACA non-resident tuition waiver does not constitute designation as a Florida Resident for tuition purposes and does not qualify recipient for such designation in the future.

Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for a DACA non-resident tuition waiver:

  • Students admitted for/after Spring 2013 or currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at FIU.
  • Have graduated from a Florida high school or
  • Have attended another Florida state college or university for the last 12 consecutive months before the first day of classes at FIU.

Tuition Assistance

Students who qualify under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) do not qualify for federal financial aid, state scholarship programs and University scholarships that are funded through the State budget allocations. DACA students may be eligible for private scholarships depending on the requirements of the individual program. Students are encouraged to use search engines such as fastweb.com, finaid.org, edupass.org and collegeboard.org. Additional information is available at www.finaid.org/otheraid/undocumented.phtml. Students may also want to speak with their advocate about opportunities available to assist in the financing of their college education.
