Financial Aid Grants

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is awarded to students with high financial need who are completing a first bachelor's degree.  The amount of the grant is based on the student's EFC and enrollment status.  Award amounts can change yearly. Students can receive the Federal Pell Grant for no more than 12 full-time semesters (including summer).  Students will be notified on their Student Aid Report (SAR) when they are approaching the lifetime Pell limit.

Pell Grant - Summer Session

A student could be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant for the summer seession in two ways.

  1. In the event a Federal Pell Grant recipient does not use his/her full award to attend full time both fall and spring, any remaining funds can be used in the summer session if student meets the enrollment criteria.
  2. Starting summer 2018 Federal Pell Grant regulations allow a student to receive additional Pell Grant funds to accelerate his/her academic career. To receive the additional Pell Grant, a student must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours in his/her major for the summer session.
Students are expected to complete all registered classes to avoid possible repayment of Financial Aid, including the Pell Grant.

The Financial Aid Office is required to recalculate eligibility for the Pell Grant after the add/drop period for each session.  Students who are registered for at least one course in Session B, will have the Pell Grant recalculated based on current enrollment for the term after the add/drop period for Session B.  Dropping Session A/C enrollment (with DR grade) may reduce the amount of the Federal Pell Grant for the term, resulting in a balance due and immediately repayable to FIU.

If you have been offered a Pell grant on your Financial Aid award letter, the amount offered is based on full time enrollment. The Pell grant is available at any enrollment level and it is based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

To find out what your Pell Grant would be reduced to if you enroll in less than 12 credits, follow the instructions below:

1. Locate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) in the table below. Your EFC amount can be found on MyFIU via View My Financial Aid >Award Summary > Financial Aid Summary.
2. To determine what your Pell Grant will be reduced to for each enrollment level, follow the chart across. Your total award for the year cannot exceed the "Maximum Annual Award".

*Please note: If you received aid at another college, or are close to the lifetime maximum limit of 600%, you may not receive the full amount of the "Term Award" and/or the "Maximum Annual Award".

TEACH Grant-Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH)

The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching.

As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve in which you agree to teach

  • in a high-need field
  • at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families
  • for at least four complete academic years within eight years after completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the course of study for which you received the grant.

IMPORTANT: If you do not complete the service obligation, all TEACH Grant funds disbursed will be converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education, with interest charged from the date the TEACH Grant was disbursed.

A full-time TEACH Grant recipient may receive four scheduled awards of up to $4,000 each, or a total of $16,000, for the first baccalaureate and post baccalaureate programs combined.

A graduate student may receive two scheduled awards, or a total of up to $8000 for a master’s program.

Student Eligibility Requirements

To receive a TEACH Grant you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) located at www.FAFSA.gov
  3. Be admitted to an eligible degree seeking program.
  4. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 for each term awarded the grant.
  5. Undergraduate students must be in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year
  6. Must be enrolled in coursework necessary to begin a career in teaching in a high-need field, which includes subjects on the nationwide shortage area list. The list can be found at http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/pol/tsa.html, which is updated each year by the U.S. Department of Education.
  7. Be enrolled for at least half-time during the semester the award is received (Fall/Spring). The TEACH grant will be prorated based on enrollment status. Undergraduate: Full-time (12+ credits), three-quarters time (9-ll credits), and half-time (6-8 credits). Graduate: Full-time (9+ credits), half-time (5-8 credits). TEACH grant is not offered in the Summer term.
  8. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by Florida International University's Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.
  9. Complete the TEACH Grant Agreement To Serve (ATS) for every academic year the grant is awarded.
  10. Student must submit a TEACH Grant Request form to the Financial Aid Office.

TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve

Each year you receive a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve that will be available electronically on a Department of Education Web site. The TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve specifies the conditions under which the grant will be awarded, the teaching service requirements, and includes an acknowledgment that you understand that if you do not meet the teaching service requirements you must repay the grant as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, with interest accrued from the date the grant funds were disbursed. Specifically, the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve will require the following:

  • For each TEACH Grant-eligible program for which you received TEACH Grant funds, you must serve as a full-time teacher for a total of at least four academic years within eight calendar years after you completed or withdrew from the academic program for which you received the TEACH Grant.
  • You must perform the teaching service as a highly-qualified teacher at a low-income school. The term highly-qualified teacher is defined in section 9101(23) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 or in section 602(10) of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
  • Your teaching service must be in a high-need field.
  • You must comply with any other requirements that the Department of Education determines to be necessary.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

If you receive a TEACH Grant but do not complete the required teaching service obligation, as explained above, TEACH Grant funds received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan that will be charged interest from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.
